Conductor Material:
The positive leg (Chromel) is made of Nickel-Chromium (Ni-Cr).
The negative leg (Alumel) is made of Nickel-Aluminum (Ni-Al).
Temperature Range:
Extension Grade Cable: Typically rated for temperatures up to 90°C (194°F).
Compensation Grade Cable: Can handle higher temperatures, often up to 200°C (392°F) or more, depending on the insulation material.
Insulation:
Common insulation materials include PVC, fiberglass, Teflon (PTFE), and PFA. The choice depends on the operating temperature and environmental conditions.
For high-temperature applications, fiberglass or Teflon insulation is often used.
Color Coding:
According to international standards (IEC 60584), Type K thermocouple cables are color-coded:
Positive leg (Chromel): Green
Negative leg (Alumel): White
The outer jacket is typically green for easy identification.
Shielding:
Many Type K cables include shielding (e.g., braided or foil) to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and ensure accurate signal transmission.
Jacket:
The outer jacket provides additional protection against abrasion, chemicals, and moisture. Common jacket materials include PVC, Teflon, and silicone.
Extension Grade Cable:
Used to extend the thermocouple signal over longer distances.
Suitable for lower-temperature environments (up to 90°C or 194°F).
Less expensive than compensation grade cable.
Compensation Grade Cable:
Made with conductors that closely match the thermocouple alloy.
Used in environments where high accuracy is required, especially over longer distances.
Can handle higher temperatures (up to 200°C or 392°F).
Conductor Material:
PT100 cables typically use high-purity copper or nickel conductors to ensure minimal resistance changes and accurate temperature measurement.
Some cables may use silver-plated copper for better conductivity and corrosion resistance.
Number of Conductors:
PT100 sensors can be 2-wire, 3-wire, or 4-wire configurations, depending on the required accuracy and application.
2-wire: Simplest configuration, but less accurate due to lead resistance.
3-wire: Compensates for lead resistance, improving accuracy.
4-wire: Most accurate, as it eliminates lead resistance entirely.
Insulation:
Insulation materials include PVC, Teflon (PTFE), silicone, and fiberglass, depending on the temperature range and environmental conditions.
For high-temperature applications, Teflon or fiberglass insulation is commonly used.
Shielding:
Many PT100 cables include shielding (e.g., braided or foil) to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and ensure accurate signal transmission.
Temperature Range:
The temperature range of the cable depends on the insulation material:
PVC: Up to 105°C (221°F)
Teflon: Up to 260°C (500°F)
Fiberglass: Up to 400°C (752°F) or higher
Color Coding:
PT100 cables are often color-coded for easy identification of conductors. Common color codes include:
2-wire: Red and white
3-wire: Red, white, and blue
4-wire: Red, white, blue, and black
